What is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)?
A Lasting Power of Attorney (abbreviated to “LPA”) is a legal document which allows you to appoint attorneys to make decisions for you, should you be unable to do so for yourself in the future.
Types of Lasting Power of Attorney
Property and Financial Decisions
You can appoint attorneys to make decisions on your behalf in regard to your financial matters and your property. Your attorneys will have authority to operate your bank accounts and investments and make decisions for you on a day to day basis when you can no longer do so for yourself.
Health and Care Decisions
This is a separate document which allows you to appoint attorneys to make decisions only when you lack mental capacity concerning such matters as medical treatment and care decisions. When you lack capacity this type of LPA permits your attorneys to make decision about for example where you should live and how any care is managed.
